The most frequently chosen and highly ranked photo came as a surprise to us. (As with the other photographs presented here, not all responses are included, and others are edited.)

Aysha, 42, a teacher: "This picture was taken in Canada Camp Egypt. It shows the mosque of Canada Camp and the destroyed houses, which were destroyed [by the people in the camp] to prevent Egyptians from moving in when we left. There is a man who used to be good in the background. There, see? He has a psychological depression, and he has become crazy. I know him. He was a contractor, and very strong."

Ayman, 24, a student: "This picture shows where I lived for 13 or maybe 15 years. And suddenly I see for the first time that place is demolished. You know there is a poem that says that your longing for home is always strongest for your first home, everywhere you go. And for me, the first place I grew up in was Canada Camp. I miss that mosque so much. That was where I started learning to pray. And near to it is the playground. Many times I played in it. I miss those times."
