"Things are not as they seem
nor are they otherwise."
-- Buddhist Scripture
Artist's Statement
We cohabit a common world that, according to our senses, appears to
be pre-given. That world, however, is not the world, it is only a world.
The truth, which perhaps we all sense intuitively, is that we live in
a mysterious multi-dimensional, multi-faceted world that is brought
forth, moment by moment, by our own attitudes, interpretations, preconceptions
and recurrent conversations. Just beyond the invisible veil of our own
certainty, lie many other worlds, just as "real" as the common, familiar,
agreed upon one we see and take for granted everyday.
My work is meant to present the familiar in a slightly unfamiliar way.
An intention of my work is to transport the viewer with beautiful, impressionistic
imagery while simultaneously challenging the viewer's assumptions about
what is real. I want to touch that place in the viewer that knows, in
their heart of hearts, that the world is not quite exactly as it seems.
My desire is to produce images that evoke feelings of mystery and wonder
and open the possibility, if even for a moment, that our existence is
subject, much more than we realize, to the power of our imagination.
Technique
Paul Grant Cutright works with Polaroid SX-70 film which is hand etched
as well as Polaroid image and emulsion transfers from 35mm color transparencies
and Polapan film. Photographs are usually produced on Ilfochrome Classic
or Fuji Super Gloss, state of the art printing mediums widely
recognized for their rich and saturated color quality, archival dye
permanence, and superlative sharpness and luminosity. Images are also
produced as Gicleé prints on water color papers.
Background
Paul received a BFA in fine art photography from the San Francisco
Art Institute in 1973. For the last twenty plus years Paul has enjoyed
a successful career in the personal development field as a speaker,
trainer, personal coach and author. This career has taken him around
the world during which time he has continued to photograph. In 1995
he began working with Polaroid materials and has been devoting more
and more time to his photographic work. Some of his strongest influences
include the painters Degas, Gaugin and Edward Hopper and photographers
André Kertesz and Ralph Gibson. Paul's work is in private collections.
In April 1997 fourteen pieces were in a group show in San Diego that
included art world luminaries such as Peter Max.
